Hola Folks,
After years of practice, perfecting (as much as one can from Canada) a somewhat decent Argentinean accent for my Spanish, I have a difficult decision to make. Do I attempt to speak only using the Spain ceceo (lisp) while away...which will probably happen anyways, or should I attempt to preserve my current Argentinean style?
To clarify, some of the major differences between these two very distinct Spanish accents are the sounds used for the "ll" and "y" letters, and the pronunciation of a "c" or "z" with the equivalent of an English "th" sound. Also, some attention must be brought to the irony of the Spanish word ceceo requiring a lisp in Spanish, not unlike the English word lisp being a difficult word for the average lisper. Maybe we purposely make these words require the very phonemes that are hard to pronounce? That is sure a jerk move!
Anyways, I would imagine that I will become a Spanish traditionalist before long and speak as a proud lisper of the King's spanish as any Spanish person. It's awfully hard to not replicate the accent of those around you. As proven by Michaela’s reaction to my attempts at a Spanish accent - it sure is going to piss off my current hispanoparlante friends when this new accent takes hold.
Maybe that is a good thing?
